Quality Markets

Quality Markets began with a store in Jamestown, New York, in 1913, and by the 1930’s, had dozens of stores serving small towns across northwest Pennsylvania and southwest New York. Quality Markets joined Penn Traffic in 1979. In 1993, Quality Markets entered the Buffalo market when Penn Traffic purchased 15 Bell Markets.

Quality Markets was the first supermarket chain in the region to use optical scanners at the checkout counter.

Today, a Quality Markets supermarket will ring up as many sales in a week as the original corner grocery stores would ring up in two years. Quality Markets was one of the first employers in the area to offer its employees a comprehensive benefits program including paid vacations and holidays, health insurance, profit-sharing and pension.
